During the monthly webinar hosted by WG4, scheduled for Monday, October 21, 2024, from 18:00 CET, Martijn Boussé will present a talk titled:

Calculus Legacy: A Narrative-Driven Board Game Experience to Discover the World of Calculus

Summary Calculus, often perceived as abstract and challenging, poses significant engagement and comprehension difficulties among students. Conventional teaching methods, typically overlooking Problem-Based Learning (PBL) principles, fail to captivate and involve student effectively. The rise of artificial intelligence adds further complexities for calculus educators. To address these challenges, we propose a novel teaching and learning approach: a legacy-style collaborative board game. This game innovatively weaves calculus concepts into an engaging narrative structure, adhering to PBL principles which emphasize collaborative, constructive, contextual, and self-directed (CCCS) learning. The game’s legacy format combines three educational strategies: co-creation, enabling students to actively participate in the game's development; gamification, which makes calculus concepts more accessible and engaging through interactive gameplay; and authentic assessment, where students create portfolios for both formative and summative evaluation. This multifaceted approach is designed to significantly enhance the learning experience and deepen students' understanding of calculus.
